JERFL Submission Guidelines

Author Guidelines

The Journal of Extensive Reading in Foreign Languages, a new refereed online research journal, seeks high-quality, empirically-researched and theoretically-sound articles on the efficacy of extensive reading methods and outcomes in various teaching and learning contexts. Submissions related to reading and other language skill development through extensive reading, especially but not exclusively related to second and foreign language acquisition, will be considered.
To be accepted for publication, papers must:

  1) demonstrate sound research methods,

  2) add to existing knowledge in the field,

  3) relate the research to theoretical constructs in the field,

  4) be applicable to enhancing ER practice, and

  5) be written in clear and concise prose in general accordance with

      the standards of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological

      Association, 6th Edition.

Our journal’s digital format allows for embedded links to digital artifacts that enhance published articles` impact and scope. We thus welcome submissions that leverage the power of the web via links and other means, provided that the use of these does not violate copyright and that the submission is able to stand alone as a complete work in printed form only.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

  1. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work’s authorship and initial publication in this journal.
  2. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal’s published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
  3. Authors are permitted to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website), as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
